Lovell is named after Henry Clay Lovell, who brought two herds of cattle to the area in 1879. Like Cowley and Byron, Lovell was built by Mormon settlers who constructed, by hand and with horse teams, the 37 mile long Sidon Canal.

Lovell, in the northern part of the county near the confluence of the Shoshone and Big Horn rivers, began with a post office in 1888 and became a town around 1900.

Lovell is a beautiful and friendly community located in the northern Big Horn Basin of Wyoming with the Bighorn Mountains to the east and Yellowstone Park to the west. Carey named the town with the name Dubois after his friend Fred Dubois, an Idaho senator at the time. In protest, the citizens of Dubois rejected the French pronunciation of "deh-bwah", instead opting for Du, with u as in "Sue"; bois, with oi as in "voice".

White settlement of the area did not begin in earnest, though, until the late 1870s when LDS Apostles Moses Thatcher and Brigham Young, Jr. chose the valley for colonization. Archibald Gardner and members of his extended family arrived in 1889, building and operating five mills of various types in the valley.

The settlement of Star Valley began in early June of 1879 when eight wagons carrying twenty-seven Mormons from St. Charles, Idaho, entered Star Valley through Crow Creek Canyon and settled in Freedom. Auburn was settled later that summer by related families from Morgan, Utah.

Hillsdale was named for Lathrop Hills, a Surveyor for the Union Pacific Railroad who was killed nearby along Lodgepole Creek on June 11, 1867, while leading a party surveying a route of the Transcontinental Railroad. Hillsdale was platted as a townsite in April 2013.

Washakie County was formed in 1911 from Big Horn County. It was named Hanover County for 7 days before it was renamed Washakie County after the Shoshoni Indian, Chief Washakie. Washakie County is small in population with only one town, Ten Sleep, and one city, Worland. There are several census-designated areas.

The community was initially named Paintrock, in 1896, after the nearby cliffs which were covered with pictographs and petroglyphs. Paintrock was renamed Hyattville after store owner and first postmaster, Sam Hyatt. Asa Mercer settled here after leaving Cheyenne following the publication of Banditti of the Plains.

Greybull (the town) was founded in 1906, right after oil and gas were discovered in the area. Cattle and oil and gas attracted the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. As the oilfield was developed, Standard Oil of Indiana and the Midwest Oil Company built refineries in Greybull.
