The community was initially named Paintrock, in 1896, after the nearby cliffs which were covered with pictographs and petroglyphs. Paintrock was renamed Hyattville after store owner and first postmaster, Sam Hyatt. Asa Mercer settled here after leaving Cheyenne following the publication of Banditti of the Plains.
