The towns “bought” Thorpe's body, built a monument in his honor, merged, and renamed the municipality Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. Thorpe had never lived in or visited the town, although he had attended an industrial school in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, 100 miles west of the borough.
