History. Churchill was founded in 1861 as one of Nevada's original counties. In Churchill's earliest years, the boundaries changed several times. In 1864, the boundary between Lyon and Churchill was established, and in 1869 part of Humboldt was ceded to Churchill.

THE CREATION OF NEVADA'S COUNTIES The first Nevada Territorial Legislature established nine counties on November 25, 1861, including Churchill, Douglas, Esmeralda, Humboldt, Lyon, Ormsby, Storey, Washoe and Lake.

An integral part of the history of Nevada and the American West, Fort Churchill was built in 1860 to provide protection for early settlers and westbound emigrants and guard the Pony Express and telegraph lines.

The town and post office were established on July 24, 1896, in a little shack belonging to Michael Fallon and Eliza Fallon, who operated a ranch at the site. Shortly afterwards, Jim Richards later operated a store near the post office. The town was officially incorporated in 1908.

Stillwater's beginning predates Nevada's advent to statehood by two years. Named for large pools of tranquil water nearby, the town originated as an overland stage station in 1862, was granted a post office in 1865, and became Churchill's third county seat in 1868.

This interest was intermittent. Many people did not take advantage of the valley's copious water supply until the early 1900's.

Officially formed in 1909, Clark County is named for Sen. William Andrews Clark (1839-1925), who established the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad that linked Los Angeles with Salt Lake City.
