In May 1868, 59-year-old Kit Carson died of natural causes at Fort Lyon, Colorado, only months after his wife died during childbirth. Their bodies were moved to Taos and buried at the present site according to their prior request (Vestal, 1928; Estergreen, 1962; Young, 1984).

Notables buried here are; Christopher "Kit" Carson, a legendary scout, Padre Antonio Martinez, a famous educator and church leader, and Mabel Dodge Lujan. Others buried here are the soldiers and other local citizens killed during the January 1847 rebellion here in Taos.

Carson died of heart failure on Boxing Day 1983 at the age of 85. She was cremated in a private ceremony at Carleton Crematorium, Blackpool, on 4 January 1984, and is commemorated at Bispham Parish Church in Blackpool.

He purchased the home in 1843 as a gift for his bride Maria Josefa Jaramillo, a member of a prominent Taos family. The Carson family lived there for 25 years. New Mexico is the ancestral home of myriad Native peoples, and part of the last geographical region formally incorporated into the continental United States.

She died of a heart attack on April 14, 1964, in her home in Silver Spring, Maryland. Her body was cremated and Carson's ashes were divided for burial beside her mother at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Rockville, Maryland, and the rest scattered along the coast of Squirrel Island, near the Sheepscot River in Maine.

Carson was married three times and had ten children. He died at Fort Lyon of an aortic aneurysm on May 23, 1868. He is buried in Taos, New Mexico next to his third wife, Josefa.
