First called Mason Center because of its location, it later became Sweetland, after James Sweetland, who built a sawmill there in 1878. Sweetland sold to Hiram Scott who officially platted the land in 1882 and named it after himself. Scottvile became a village in 1889 and a city in 1907.

The current village is actually the second settlement in Mason County to be named Free Soil. There are still a few homes in the area now known as "Old Freesoil". The railroad was extended to Free Soil around 1882, and the village was incorporated in 1912. The community derives its name from the Free Soil Party.

The county was created by Michigan Law on April 1, 1840, from land in Sanilac County and attached to Saginaw County for administrative purposes. The Michigan Legislature passed an act on March 2, 1850, that empowered the county residents to organize governmental functions.

Oscoda County was established March 10, 1881. Previously, it had been Comins Township attached to Alcona County, which had been formed about 1869 when it was split from Alpena County. Prior to that, the area belonged to the Native Americans who ceded it to the United States Government by the Treaty of Saginaw in 1819.
